Old Town Road Ukulele – Chords and Lyrics

I’m sure you’ve heard this song… it’s gotten tons of play over the past couple years. It’s catchy and fun. I asked my daughter recently if she had any songs she wanted to learn and this was the one she picked, Old Town Road on Ukulele.

So I built this chord chart for us to learn the song with.

I hope you enjoy. If you need help with the chords I’ll explain and show how to play them after the chord chart here.

How Do You Play C on a Ukulele?

You play the C chord on a ukulele by putting your first finger (or 3rd finger) on the 3rd fret of the E string. When you play open C on the ukulele, you let the top 3 strings sing out.

Here’s a chord diagram I made to help you visualize how to play it.

What is G Major on Ukulele?

G Major on Ukulele is another fundamental chord that you must master in the beginning of your ukulele journey. It’s a bit more complicated compared to most of the other major chords, but with a little practice you’ll be sure to get it quickly.

The first finger goes on the 2nd fret of the C string, the 2nd finger goes on the 2nd fret of the E string and the third finger goes on the 3rd fret of the A string. I like to visualize a little triangle shape. Just imagine making that triangle so that you can get your fingers into the right position quickly.

Here’s a chord diagram I made so you can quickly learn how to play the G Major chord:

Here’s a fun fact: If you have played guitar very much, this is the same chord shape as the D chord on guitar!

And speaking of D…

How do you play D on the Ukulele?

You can play D on the ukulele by placing your 1st finger on the 2nd fret of the G string, your 2nd finger on the 2nd fret of the C string and your 3rd finger on the 2nd fret of the A string.

It might be helpful to change your fingers around a bit if you find it feeling too cramped. I sometimes use my 2nd, 3rd and 4th fingers… or you can try barreing all the way across with your 1st finger too.

Another fun fact : This D chord on the Ukulele is the same as the A chord on the guitar.

Do You Have to Cut your Nails to Play Ukulele?

Yes, you have to keep your nails trimmed to play ukulele with your fretting hand. If your nails grow too long, then you won’t be able to easily use the pads of your fingers to press the strings down and won’t get a good sound from the instrument.

You can trim your nails and keep them nice looking and manicured.

On the other hand, your nails on the hand you strum with can use a little bit extra length, so you can almost use them like a pick, or if you want to practice playing fingerstyle they can be really helpful for making a good sound.
